Springing into You ~ Dr Nadine’s Nuggets

logosite.jpgHello and Welcome to a Spring edition of NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Iridology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

Spring is such a lovely time filled with Possibility and Excitement. Knowing that flowers will be popping up from their fertile hideaway from months past. We, too are like those flowers. Many of us have been in a hideaway in the past months, steeped in fertile ground, simply waiting for the chance to break through the topsoil and rise towards the sun. With possibility in the wind, Who are you? What will you become? What will you Stand For?

So many times I hear folks list out their new years resolutions, only to see them fall by the wayside by March. My personal belief is that we do not follow through with those resolutions because they are old, they are habit, they are soooooo five minutes ago. One of my favorite sayings is “Been There!, Done That!, Have the t-shirt (usually in every size)!”  Since we have already learned all there is to learn from that resolution or way of being we quickly lose interest.

Looking back or repeating old behavior holds no value. We want to learn. We want to grow. Like that new flower, we want to poke our new little head out of the fertile ground and reach for the sun. With an opportunity to explore uncharted territory, asking ourselves “Who am I? What do I want to become? What will I Stand For?”, become vital.

Spring is a wonderful time to explore new behavior(s), or new ways of being. As an example, let’s say Joe would like to explore the concept of Kindness. For today, Joe might look for 1-2 ways in which he can be kind to himself first and foremost (eat a good breakfast, take a shower, congratulate himself on a job well done, etc). Then how he can show kindness to another (open a door, say thank you, play with his cat, etc). Tomorrow, repeat the process, starting with himself first, then expanding to another. Before long, Kindness will be Joe’s new habit or way of being.

Affirmation: I matter to ME! As I learn to be KIND to myself, I can then be Kind to others.

Lisa has put everyone and everything first in her life. If you asked Lisa where she fits in the list of priorities, she will be the first to tell you, “I don’t matter, your needs are important, I come last”. My response?? BULL DO HICKEY!!! (and yes that is slang for crapola, major crapola). What if Lisa were to explore Self-Value. Lisa can begin small, with 5 minute sections just for her. I had a client who used to take ‘smoking breaks’. Mind you, she did not smoke, but those who did were given a 15 min smoking break multiple times during the day while at work. So my client would grab a pack of cigarettes and go out and stand by a tree to simply take some time for HER. Rather than a smoking break, we can create a Lisa Break. Here are a ideas Lisa might explore.

  • Put on a song, and while the entire song is playing, Lisa get’s to indulge in something for herself (dancing around the room, trying on fun clothes, sitting quietly). Songs usually last 3-15 minutes. Wow, Lisa can build on this one and choose to Value herself for an entire CD.
  • Hang a Lisa’s Time sign on the bedroom door. While that sign is hanging, no-one gets to bother Lisa. Inside Lisa might be enjoying a nap, a bubble bath, painting her nails etc. Anything, so long as LISA is the focus. This activity is great for 30 -60 mins. The key to this activity is honoring the sign. That means Lisa must also honor this boundary. Someone will attempt to break it. So it is key that Lisa honor this by saying.. I value myself. This is MY time.
  • Wear a Lisa Hat ~ while the hat (any item will work) is ON, everyone can see Lisa, and Lisa can see them, however, each person must rely on themselves or other family members/co-workers etc. This one gives Lisa the ability to supervise or chaperon etc without hearing, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom.

Affirmation: I am Valuable. Each time I Value MYSELF I allow others to see my self-worth and value me as well.

Jill has an old habit/pattern of being alone, very quiet and staying hidden. She would dearly love to be Visible and Acknowledged. Before others can see her or acknowledge her, Jill must learn to see herself, acknowledge herself. Let’s explore a few action steps Jill might take as she embraces this new way of being.

  • First thing in the morning, find a mirror, look at herself and say I See You
  • Throughout the day, every time Jill passes a reflective surface, Stop, look into the reflective surface and acknowledge herself with the statement: I See You Jill.
  • Acknowledgment Journal ~List 3 things to acknowledge yourself for. This can be done anytime during the day and is a great way to end the day. The wording is something like this: I acknowledge myself for putting on my socks. I acknowledge myself for choosing healthy foods today. I acknowledge myself for smiling at the clerk at the store. I acknowledge myself for embracing a new behavior.

Affirmation: I love being Seen. The more I acknowledge myself the more I can see myself. I AM Visible in the world.

Such glorious flowers are blooming when we each embrace a new behavior. A new way of being. The key is to do it for YOU first and foremost. Once you practice on YOU, the behavior can be practiced on those around you, those safe to you. Then the behavior can be practiced on those outside of that inner circle.

iPad_111Excitement IS in the air as you Spring into You. May you experience both rain and sunshine during this time of growth and expansion. And remember, as you learn a new behavior/talent etc, mistakes are part of the process. The point is, you are Learning. You are Growing. If you try out a process that truly does not work for you, prune it, or pass it along for another. May your bouquet be filled with Variety, Color, Scents and Glory.

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Winter Herbal Remedies

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Winter Herbal Remedies

Hello Dear Readers, and Welcome to a Winter edition of NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.Hello and Welcome to a Winter edition of NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

Due to the feedback I received on the last edition of the Healing properties found in SPICES common to most kitchens, my intention was to have this issue focus on more of the same.  However it appears another round of ‘crud’ has landed with folks experiencing some deep seeded coughing bouts or sinus issues that do not seem to let go.  In an effort to assist everyone on feeling better, I thought to send out a ditty on a few Herbal Remedies I have found useful.  These remedies can be located at your local health stores [Natural Grocers Vitamin Cottage, Whole Foods, Sunflower Market, Sprouts, etc].  Some stores will carry either the same brand or something very similar.  The key here is to look at what the remedy is for.  Each of these remedies listed below can be taken alone or in combination with another remedy.

Osha Root Complex Syrup by Herbs Etc is a fast acting dietary supplement for a nasty cough. Osha Root Complex Syrup promotes healthy throat tissues.  Calms the cough almost immediately.  Provides a protective coating to the throat tissues. Dilates the bronchioles, decreases lung congestions, liquefies lung secretions and promotes expectoration.  The ingredients in this complex syrup include: Osha root, White Pine bark, Black Cherry bark, Spikenard root, Balsam Poplar bud and Bloodroot root in a glycerine/gum arabic syrup base.  Contraindications: Do not use in pregnancy

Note:  if your store does not have Osha Root Complex Syrup, check out Serious Cough by Wish Garden, a soothing formula to help clear coughs and reduce non-productive coughing.  Great taken at the first sign of a lung infection, or helpful for a cough that just won’t go away!

Deep Lung & Bronchials by Wish Garden Herbs resolves deep lung and lower respiratory conditions.  This remedy provides bronchial relaxing. It is anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and very soothing. This remedy contains strength-building and tonifying herbs to tone and nourish lungs and mucous membranes.  Great for long-term lung issues, lung weakness, asthma, and for recovering smokers. The active ingredients include Osha Root, Yerba Manza root, Elecampane root, Mullein leaf, Yarrow flowers, Yerba Santa leaf, Licorice root and Garlic.

Kick-Ass Immune by Wish Garden Herbs truly is a first line for immune defense.  This remedy boosts natural resistance, stimulates and supports the immune system during acute illness.  It is especially effective when taken at the first signs of illness such as sneezing or a scratchy, soar throat.  When I first purchased this incredible mix of herbs, I got the smallest bottle available.  Now I keep a 2 oz bottle on hand.  Most health food stores will even have Kick-ass Immune by the check out registers.  The active ingredients include Ingredients: Echinacea root & flower, Goldenseal root, Osha root, Baptisia root, Yarrow flower, Elder flower and Yerba Santa leaf.

Super Sinus by Dr Daves Herbal Medicine, relieves symptoms such as post-nasal drip, a runny or stuffed up nose, clogged head and frontal headaches.  Super Sinus moistens and loosens the sinus cavities, transforms phlegm, circulates blood while it drives out blood stasis and clears heat toxins.  The key ingredients include Reed Decoction (Wei Jing Tang) and Xanthium Powder (Cang Er Zi San). The  Reed Decoction: Phragmitis (Lu Gen), Coix (Yi Yi Ren), Benincansa Seed (Dong Gua Ren) and Peach Seed (Tao Ren).

Affirmation:  I allow the healing properties of these herbs to soothe my body and allow me to rest.

I mentioned above that each of these can be taken individually or combined.  As an example, should a person be experiencing a very nasty cough with sinus crapola, the Osha Root Complex Syrup can be combined with Super Sinus and Kick-Ass Immune in a small portion of warm water and sipped like tea or downed in a few gulps.  Follow the suggested dosages provided on each remedy.

Note:  drinking coffee is counter productive with herbal remedies.  Meaning the coffee will negate the healing properties provided in the tincture.

The last piece of information I will include in this Nuggets is JUICE PLUS+®.  The Orchard and Garden Blend provides added whole food based nutrition from 17 different fruits, vegetables, and grains in convenient capsule form.  The ingredients provide a wide range of nutritional benefits which include: delivers key antioxidants and other phytonutrients that are absorbed by the body, reduces oxidative stress, reduces systemic inflammation, helps support a healthy immune system, supports cardiovascular wellness, supports healthy skin, to name a few.

Juice Plus+ is made from fresh, high quality fruits and vegetables, and is carefully tested to ensure that no pesticides or other contaminants affect the natural purity of the product.  As a cancer survivor, I have been taking a double dosage of Juice Plus+ since 2003 to build my immune system. Here is a link to my Juice Plus+ websiteThere is a short video should you desire to explore this option in greater depth.  You can order directly from that website.

Affirmation:  I embrace new options that allow my body to Heal.  Options that allow my immune system to become stronger.

Thank you for joining me for another addition of Nadine’s Nuggets.  Until next issue…

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ SPICE o Rama

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ SPICE-0-Rama

Hello Dear Readers, and Welcome to the August edition of NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

Thank you for your assistance in making a smooth transition to the Mail Chimp software. Please do take a few minutes to Update your Profile (click here) information to ensure you are greeted with your name rather than Hello (empty space). The update provides options to receive reminders for upcoming events, publications etc. This issue explores the Healing properties found in SPICES common to most kitchens. So, without further adieu let’s begin.

TURMERIC (Curcuma longa) can be used as a blood purifier, liver detoxifier, stimulant and vulnerary. Vulneraries are herbs that encourage the healing of wounds by promoting cell growth and repair.

The characteristic golden color of curry powder and most Indian dishes comes from the rhizome or root of this plant. It has a spicy flavor and a warm, bitter energy.

Turmeric can be applied both internally and externally to heal wounds, relieve pain/inflammation in the limbs, break up congestion and can be used to restore the loss of blood during child birth. It is very beneficial to the circulatory system and helps to regulate the menstrual cycle.

One teaspoon of powdered turmeric root can be taken twice daily to help regulate the menus or to prevent or lessen PMS symptoms. It gently activates liver functionality, becoming a natural liver detoxifier, to help regulate and balance the hormones.

The anti-inflammatory properties of Turmeric are helpful in treating arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, whereas the natural antiseptic and antibacterial agents are useful in disinfecting cuts and burns. Turmeric is also used for reducing fevers and nose bleeds.

Affirmation: I can allow my body to release pain and inflammation as I add flavor to my meal with turmeric

CINNAMON (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is a stimulating herb used to increase energy, drive circulation, break up obstructions and mucus, and will warm the body. The demulcent properties of Cinnamon will sooth any mucilage and can protect damaged or inflamed tissues. The carminative properties can relieve gas and griping.

Cinnamon warms the system and is useful when added to balance cooling foods such as fruits, milk and desserts. Medicinally it is used to warm the organs to treat chronic diarrhea, cramps, heart and abdominal pains, coughing, wheezing and lower back pain. Simmered in milk and taken with a little honey, cinnamon is very effective for the relief of indigestion, gas, diarrhea and dysentery.

I recommend all of my clients, and especially those with Type II Diabetes, take 1 TBS of Cinnamon a day to help moderate their blood glucose levels. Studies have shown that Cinnamon can reduce blood sugar levels, increase the natural production of insulin and lower blood cholesterol.. I personally use Cinnamon as a way to ‘sweeten’ my food and keep any ‘cravings’ at bay.

Affirmation: My organs are warmed and mucus released as cinnamon enters my system.

FENNEL (Foeniculum vulgare) is crunchy and slightly sweet and most often associated with Italian dishes. This valuable seed spice combines several herbal and healing properties. It is an antispasmodic (used to prevent or relax muscle spasms); a carminative (used to relieve gas and griping); diuretic (used to increase the flow of urine); expectorant (used to assist in expelling mucus from the lungs and throat); and a stimulant (used to increase the energy of they body).

Fennel seeds contain aromatic or essential oils that are very similar in structure and activity to those of Catnip and Peppermint. While Catnip oils are better suited for use in infants, Fennel is especially effective against flatulence in adults. Should you find yourself away from home without your digestive enzymes handy, chewing a small portion of Fennel seeds will relieve the gas, bloating and gripping from the meal you just consumed.

A tea (decoction) can be made using one teaspoon of crushed seeds in a cup of boiled water, steeped for twenty minutes and used to treat colic, cramps and gas and to expel mucus. The cooled tea can be used externally as an eyewash. You will see Fennel used in herb formulas containing strong laxatives to prevent gripping and in cough syrups to prevent chronic coughs.

Affirmation: Hallelujah, no more gas or gripping after that thanksgiving meal by chewing a few fennel seeds.

I was going to add in GARLIC, the world-renowned cure-all as a home remedy in practically every culture, then looked at the length of this NUGGETS. Should you find value in this information, please leave comments on the blog, or send in an email. If you want information on specific Spices or Herbs, let me know and I will do my best to deliver. Until the next publication, may you be pain, inflammation and gas free

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Embracing Change

Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Embracing Change

Hello Dear Readers, and Welcome to a new edition of NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

CHANGE is in the air! Evidence can be seen on the news, in the weather patterns and within conversations surrounding you. Within the past weeks, my awareness has been drawn to multiple conversations regarding shifts in health status, shifts in employment status or moving to a new home or territory.

Within each conversation was an underlying thread of the unknown, a spark of uncertainty. At the same time, there was a sense of excitement for what might be on the horizon. Old behavior might have each of us grabbing onto what we know (panic, fear, etc) as we discover that with CHANGE comes OPPORTUNITY. And with Opportunity, a door will open allowing us to grow.

Affirmation:I Believe there is more for me to Explore. For now, I will simply Allow Myself to FEEL my Feelings

We have the Opportunity to be Grateful for the Past. Here are a few thoughts to ponder:
* What is the most significant skill I mastered in this place?
* What did I learn about Myself while being here?
* How did I grow? List all the areas
* Where was my growth hindered or blocked?
* What friendships did I Embrace?

We also have the Opportunity to Create our next steps. Thoughts to ponder might include:
* What NEW Opportunities are now available to me as I move forward?
* In what ways can I Growth?
* What Risks might I encounter with this new opportunity?
* How would I like be be Seen or Validated in my next relationship, job, etc
* How would I like to be greeted on a daily basis?
* How would I like to be compensated for my time? Knowledge? Etc
* What is an area of my personality I would like Embrace? (have more eye contact, smile more, present a Positive outlook on life, etc)
* Create a list of ALL of the Things YOU would like to experience in your new job/relationship etc.

Affirmation: I follow my Inner Guidance and Embrace this new phase of my journey

The Bach Flower Remedy WALNUT ~ helps with new beginnings . Bach wrote that Walnut is ‘the Remedy for those who have decided to take a great step forward in life, to break old conventions, to leave old limits and restrictions and start on a new way.’ If you find you have made a choice to move in a new direction or take on a new challenge, have your bags packed and are sitting in your boat, but the boat is still tied to the dock, Walnut is the remedy to choose.

As you EMBRACE this CHANGE in your life… I say.. CONTRATS to you. Enjoy the ride… and… Share your Journey with someone. Odds are, they just might hold the key to the doorway you are supposed to enter.

Affirmation:I Embrace this Glorious path I find myself Traveling. I walk forward in Confidence, Ease and Joy.

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Tools for Holiday Eating

Dr Nadine’s NuggetsTOOLS for Holiday Eating

Hello Dear Friends. Welcome to a new edition of Dr. NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

I have much to be Thankful for as this holiday season embraces us with opportunities to show Kindness, Love and Self-care.  I mention SELF-CARE, for many times we as humans fall into the void of unconscious eating.  Folks mean well, however the end result is not always the Desired Outcome. This issue offers a few tips and tools for HOLIDAY EATING.  I invite you to email me for the full list of Tools so that you can create a wonderful holiday experience for yourself. You are invited to visit the Blog out on the main website, post questions, leave comments and basically Come PLAY with me.

TOOL #1: PRE-PLAN ~ I can’t say enough about planning ahead.  When you plan for an event, or meal, you have a structure to follow.  Once you have created the PLAN, STICK TO IT.  Do not leave  the house unprepared.

TOOLS for attending a Cocktail Party ~ Cocktail parties have lots of variety, come in small sizes and usually include many Healthy Options.

  • Look over ALL the options before putting ANYTHING on your plate.
  • Select the smallest size plate available.
  • Select 3-4 things to put on your plate.  Allow for SPACE in-between those items.
  • Move away from the table so that you are only eating from your plate.
  • You do NOT have to eat everything you selected.
  • THROW the plate away when you are complete to remove hand-to-mouth disease.

TOOLS for the never ending Office Cookie Plate ~ have we mentioned the word PRE-PLANNING????  One item off your PLAN is acceptable, however one item every hour, every day is a set up for failure, not to mention the possibility of gaining excess fat and overloading the bodies ability to handle the sugar intake.

  • Make a suggestion for all the food be placed in ONE spot, preferably a place you will not see or smell.  Most over eating is a head game.  If you can’t see it, you won’t want it.  It is that simple.
  • Suggest there be only ONE day for ‘excess’ food.
  • When you do eat the food, keep it to one room.  Avoid taking it to your desk.
  • Give yourself permission to have one junk food item out of every 9 healthy food items.

PRE-PLANNING is the key for success.  Celebrate EACH new SUCCESS as they happen.  Wherever you put your focus is what you will have more of.  When you Celebrate eating Healthy your body will love you right back and crave more of those Healthy choices.  Have a great Holiday season filled with Laughter, Joy and less of you for the New Year!

Affirmation: I practice SELF-CARE during this Holiday season

Affirmation: Loving Myself includes creating a Plan and FOLLOWING that Plan.

Affirmation: I CELEBRATE my SUCCESS each time I Love Myself by eating Healthy Food Choices.

Affirmation: I LOVE how my body FEELS when I eat Healthy, Energy Giving, Choices.

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Fun Protein Packed Recipes

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Fun Protein Packed Recipes

Hello Dear Friends. Welcome to a new edition of Dr. NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

I apologize for the delay in writing a news letter. My attention has been on completing my Iridology Certification and getting the SOUL FOOD cards ready for production. Stay posted on the cards as they ARE coming!!!!! This issue offers a few Fun Protein Packed Recipes to try out, enjoy, and share. You are invited to visit the Blog out on the main website, post questions, leave comments and basically Come PLAY with me.

Power Balls
* 2 scoops of your favorite Protein powder
* added flavoring if you desire (cinnamon, orange extract, etc)
* 2 TBS Peanut Butter or Almond Butter (you might need to heat this just a scooch)
* 1/2 cup of dry Quinoa Flakes, Oat Flakes, Spelt Flakes etc
* a little water, almond milk, or soy milk to moisten the protein powder

mix all the above together.
Roll into smaller balls… if they are ‘sticky’ you can put them in a baggie with ground Flaxseeds or dry cocoa powder to coat the outsides.
pop in fridge or freezer to set. ~ ENJOY

Note: Power Balls are great at work, school, in a conference, on a hike, on a golf course, or any place you can have a bite here or a bite there. They are awesome frozen.

Affirmation: I allow my self to explore a new recipe, releasing my creativity… Yahoo… I get to PLAY!!!.

Protein Pudding
* 2 scoops of your favorite Protein powder
* 4 TBS ground Flaxseeds
* add in any spices/flavorings if you desire (vanilla, extracts, cocoa powder, cinnamon, etc)

Stir in cold water to the thickness of a ‘pudding’. If not COLD enough, or thick enough to YOUR desire, pop your creation in the freezer for about 30-45 minutes. This makes a lovely cold treat loaded with Protein and Healthy Fats.

Note: This one is awesome when attending a conference. Carry your Protein Powder and Flax seeds in little baggies. Pitchers of ice water are usually provided. Mix your ingredients in a container then let it sit ON ice for another little bit. WOW… what a lovely thick treat either in the middle of the day… or at night when you want that ‘ice cream’ thing.

Affirmation: I release any fear around creating something new and different as I allow my Body to receive nourishment from my creations.

Oatmeal/Quinoa Pancakes
* 6-8 egg whites
* 1/2 cup dry Oats or Quinoa Flakes
* your desired flavorings
* Stevia to sweeten

Fluff this mixture up with a fork and allow to ‘set’… (I usually put it in the fridge overnight). Once ‘set’ or thickened,
Fry like a pancake.
Put a TBS of Almond Butter or Peanut Butter on top to get in your Healthy Fats.

Note: These pancakes are great for hikes, biking, trips, flights, etc. They travel very well. They can be made in advance and frozen. Be creative here.. There are no limits to what you can do with this pancake.

Affirmation: I feed my body healthy Protein, healthy Fats and a small portion of complex Carbs.

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Food Combining

logo_blog

Dr Nadine’s NuggetsFood Combining

Hello Dear Friends. Welcome to a new edition of Dr. NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

It has been a few months since I have sent out a news letter. This issue offers information about Food Combining to assist with improved digestion of food. You are invited to visit the Blog out on the main website, post questions, leave comments and basically Come PLAY with me.

From a Nutrition perspective, three important ways to improve food digestion, reduce food allergies and improve overall general health include creating an Acid-Alkaline Balance, Food Combining and Food Rotation. This issue of will focus on Food Combining. To enjoy the benefits of a healthy digestive system and to allow our bodies to utilize the nutrients from the food we eat, certain rules for the way food is combined within a meal need to be observed. The idea of combining food is to join two incomplete proteins (grains, legumes, nuts & seeds, and veggies) to obtain a complete protein.

The Basic guidelines for Food Combining are as follows:

  • Grains + Legumes (rice and beans)
  • Seeds + Legumes (sesame seeds with garbanzo beans)
  • Nuts + Legumes (tofu with sliced almonds)
  • Grains + Milk (hot oatmeal with milk)
  • Grains + Eggs (rice with eggs)
  • Veggies + Milk (cream soups)
  • Veggies + Eggs (salad with sliced eggs)

In addition, the following are some suggested guidelines to follow for combining food in an effort to assist the digestive system:

  • Fruits are to be eaten alone or with other fruits (not melons)
  • Milk is considered a food and is suggested to be eaten alone
  • Protein foods (meat) are not to be eaten with Starches (bread, potatoes). WHY?? For the best digestion, Proteins require an acid digestive medium while Starches require an alkaline one. When eaten together, they interfere with each other’s utilization, making digestion take longer and inefficient.
  • Eat One Protein source per meal (do not put steak with shrimp etc or cheese with meat). Mixing more than one protein source can be very taxing on the digestive track, and often provides an excessive amount of Bad fats with the protein.
  • DO Combine Protein + Veggies
  • DO Combine Starch + Veggies
  • Fruits and Simple Sugars are not to be eaten along with or after other food due to fermentation in the stomach, bloating, gas etc
  • Melons are to be eaten alone. Especially not to be eaten with other fruits
  • Fruits are best eaten in the morning

Affirmation: I feed my body the nutrients it needs in combinations that allow for digestive ease.

Affirmation: I allow my body to absorb the nutrients from the foods I combine.

Affirmation: I release any fear around creating a shift and allow my Body to receive nourishment from the foods I combine.

Dr Nadine’s Nuggets ~ Sea/Ocean Vegetables

Dr Nadine’s NuggetsSea/Ocean Vegetables

Hello Dear Friends, and Welcome to a new edition of NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

This issue offers information about Sea/Ocean Vegetables and features a few possible applications.  Enjoy the read, be creative and share your experiences and recipes for all to enjoy.

Sea/Ocean Vegetables

Sea vegetables and marine super foods like spirulina and chlorella can be viewed as a medicine chest of Premium Nutrition. Ounce for ounce sea vegetables are higher in essential nutrients than any other food group.  They are vigorous sources of Proteins Enzymes, Antioxidants and Amino-acids with whole cell availability.  In addition, sea plants offer your body the basic building blocks for acid/alkaline balance, help regulate body-fluid osmosis, strengthen nerves synapses, assist in digestive and circulatory activity and help reduce cholesterol and regulate blood sugar levels.   Whew!!

Types and Uses of Sea Vegetables

Agar-agar ~ is a seaweed combination that is used as a gelling agent in cooking and for deserts.  It is a good place to start with children or folks who are first introducing sea vegetables into their intake.

Arame ~ is a dark, thin seaweed thread that can be used in soups or salads or mixed with rice, rye, spelt, kamut etc.  It is fairly rich in protein, iodine, calcium and iron and is considered one of the tastier seaweeds with a nutty type of flavor.

Dulse ~ is a red-purple leaf that is rich in iodine, iron and calcium.  Dulse has a bacon type flavor that is lovely in fresh salads, on sandwiches or in soups.  Dulse does not need to be cooked. Some stores sell this as strips (lovely in salads or just to eat), flakes (great for spicing up omelets or cooking with), or as a powder (used like a spice)

Hijiki ~ is a very mineral-rich, high-fiber seaweed.  The dark, long strands look like thick hairs.  Hijiki is about 10-20 percent protein, contains some vitamin A, and is richest in calcium, iron and phosphorus.  Once it is soaked in water, it can be cooked in soup, tossed with vegetables or added to grains.  Hijiki (thicker strand) is very similar to Arame (thinner strand).

Kelp ~ is usually used in smaller quantities than other seaweeds and makes a great seasoning. I have found it in many health food stores in ground form that can be sprinkled on your foods as you prepare them.  Kelp has some protein and is very rich in iodine, calcium and potassium, along with some of the B vitamins.

Kombu ~ is a richer, meatier, higher-protein seaweed that is incredible as a soup stock or added to beans.  The natural glutamates in Kelp/Kombu help enhance flavors and tenderize beans.  Some folks remove the Kombu, others chop it and reintroduce is as part of the soup/bean mixture.  I have found that combo to be most delightful.  An added benefit to incorporating Kombu in the beans… no need to take Beano since your body can now digest the bean without creating ‘gas’ in your digestive track.. yahoo.

Seaweed baths are nature’s perfect body/psyche balancer.  I enjoy putting Kombu strips in my BATH.  First I boil about 2 cups of water, add 1-2 strips of Kombu and turn off the stove.  After about 15 mins, pour that entire mixture into your bath water.  The sea greens will balance your body chemistry instead of dehydrating it.  The electromagnetic action of the seaweed releases excess body fluids from congested cells, and dissolves fatty wastes through the skin, replacing them with depleted minerals.  The Vitamin K in seaweeds will boost adrenal activity, and maintain hormonal balance.  Seaweed baths stimulate lymphatic drainage and fat burning so you can keep off excess weight, reduce cellulite and rid your body of toxins.  While enjoying this bath, rub the Kombu between your hands to release the gelatinous material within the membranes.  Stand up, rub the gelatin ON places where you are storing toxins/fat/cellulite then sink back into the tub.  Note:  I tried this once with Wakame and ended up with slug… though very pretty was not what I was wanting.  I have found Kombu to be the winner here.

Nori ~ is one of the most commonly used seaweeds.  The flat sheets can be eaten right out of the package, roasted on the stove top and sprinkled with flavorings of your choice, and are used in the creation of sushi.  The dark sheets are very rich in protein, containing about 50 percent protein and high in fiber.  Nori is very high in Vitamin A, calcium, iodine, iron, and phosphorus, and is one of the sweeter flavors of the seaweeds.

Wakame ~ this thin flat seaweed, also high in protein, is mainly used in soups.  I have used it in omelets and attempted it in my seaweed bath (did NOT like the thick goo results).  Wakame contains some Vitamin A, lots of calcium, iron and sodium with a bit of Vitamin C as well.

Where to purchase your Sea Vegetables

ALL Health Food stores will have all of the above Sea Vegetables.  Some of them even have roasted, flavored Nori strips.  Many Oriental markets have a lovely range of items; Food-Coops will have a range in their Herb/Bulk rooms.  Just the other day I found BRAGG SEA KELP DELIGHT seasoning in the spice aisle of Vitamin Cottage.  It is Incredible!!!!  I use it on fish, eggs, turkey, chicken, salad, veggies, etc.  Did I mention It is Incredible!!!!  Start with something.  Bring in about 2 TBS of Sea Vegetables into your daily dietary intake.  Take a Kombu Bath.  Play. Nadine’s NuggetsExploring Bach Flower Remedies

Hello Dear Friends, and Welcome to a new edition of NADINE’S NUGGETS ~ morsels of information from various arenas including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbology, Personal Training and Nutrition.

This issue offers information about Bach Flower Remedies and features a few possible applications for Humans, Animals and Flowers. I have also included a bit of information on upcoming classes and the launch of a Blog out on the main website. Please consider this my personal invitation to Come and PLAY with me.

Edward Bach developed 38 Flower Essences or Remedies as a safe and natural method of healing. When a person is in a negative state, such as fear, worry, hatred or indecision, their energy field is distorted or out of harmony. Such a distortion slows down the energy field affecting their entire psyche. The flowers used in the Bach Remedies are of a higher order, each embodying a certain Soul quality harmonious with the energy frequencies of the Soul (Higher Self).

The Bach Flower Remedy floods the energy pathways and acts as a form of catalyst to re-establish contact where the energy waves have become broken. The blockage causing the disharmony is gently dissolved, allowing the Higher Self to communicate with the Body. As Love, Joy, Peace, Courage and Happiness return, BALANCE is restored to the Being as a Whole so that the Body is free to “heal itself”.

WALNUT ~ helps with new beginnings in the mental and spiritual sphere, and proves useful in major stages of biological change such as in teething, puberty, pregnancy, menopause or in the terminal stages of physical life.

For Animals: Walnut restores the ability to adapt to change. Examples include; females coming into season or heat, during pregnancy, after neutering, during teething and weaning and for before and after anesthesia.

For Plants: In the garden, Walnut will assist the transition from one growth phase to the next and helps with cut flowers due to the change in environment.

Affirmation: I follow my Inner Guidance and Embrace this new phase of my journey.
