Acid Indigestion ~ Paper

ACID INDIGESTION
by
NADINE, N.D., C.N.S.

Harmony and Balance – two key words to a healthy digestive system. When we eat nutritious foods that are in Harmony with our body we provide the macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to assist in the natural healing, cell growth and Balance of our Mind, Body and Spirit. When we eat out of Balance we create a disharmonious relationship with our natural digestive system creating havoc in the form of acid indigestion.

Acid Indigestion is exactly what the name implies – a lack of digestion with an imbalance of stomach acid. Common symptoms of indigestion include bloating, belching, sour burps, gas, heaviness, regurgitation, nausea, cramping and pain. Too little stomach acid is the most common reason for most symptoms of simple indigestion. Other causes of an imbalance include: eating or drinking too fast, which creates hiccups; introducing a new food in large quantities, which creates gas and many times sour burps if the food has a high acid concentration; eating or drinking too much at one time, which creates heartburn because the acidic juice in the stomach backs up into the esophagus; eating on an irregular schedule; and lastly, eating foods that are on your AVOID list.

The digestive system feeds the rest of the body and is itself sensitive to malnutrition or under-nutrition. Our goal then is to ensure we are providing our bodies with adequate amounts of protein, carbs, fat, water, vitamins and minerals. Below is a listing of the nutrient and the role it plays within the body.

Nutrient Role in the Body
Protein Repairs damage to tissues and cells as they normally break down, stimulates and maintains bodily metabolism. Proteins can help normalize the acid-base balance by acting as a buff
Carbs Main source of fuel and needed to regulate protein and fat metabolism
Fats Protects vital organs from trauma and temperature change by providing padding and insulation. When the digestive system is working well, up to 95 percent of dietary fats are absorbed into the body
Water Carries nutrients to the cells of the body; transports toxins out
Vitamins Essential for growth, health, vitality and helpful in digestion, elimination and resistance to disease
Minerals Like vitamins, assist the body in energy production

How much is enough? Balancing the macronutrients (proteins, carbs and fats) within your diet is a key factor to a healthy digestive system. While rare cases pop up, I have found the majority of my nutrition clients reach a healthy balance with a daily macronutrient breakdown of 30 percent Protein, 50 percent Carbohydrate and 20 percent Good Fats (poly unsaturated). As you learn to create your meal plan, focus on fueling your body with Primary and Secondary foods first and filling in the gaps with Tertiary foods. Keep a journal and note when your body is out of balance. As you learn more about your own digestive system and food needs, you may want to further refine your daily intake. Two methods I highly recommend are to Eat For Your Blood Type and to incorporate those foods that bring the Alkaline/Acid base of your body into balance.

Food Item Resource
Primary Foods Whole grains –20-30% – rice, quinoa, amaranth, oats,
spelt, kamut, etc

Protein – 20-30% – animal proteins, fish, tofu, tempeh,
beans, legumes, etc

Secondary Foods Vegetables – 30-40% – fresh and seasonal
Tertiary Foods Dairy, eggs, and fruits – 5-10%
Fats and oils – 2%
Eat Right 4 Your Type Focus on eliminating the AVOID foods and incorporating the BENEFICIAL and Neutral Foods. This link will take you to a wonderful database where you can look up individual foods http://www.dadamo.com/typebase4/typeindexer.htm
Alkaline/Acid Base Foods Eat 80% Alkaline foods and 20% Acid foods. Begin slowly and incorporate foods slowly. This link will take you to a site that incorporates Alkaline/Acid Balance foods with Blood Type information. I have linked you to blood type O since it is the predominate type.

If you suffer from indigestion the use of over the counter antacids (tums, Rolaids, etc) is counterproductive. The problem here is that antacids are designed only to temporarily relieve pain caused by heartburn by neutralizing stomach acid for a while. However, when the antacids reduce normal stomach acidity, the result is producing MORE acid to restore the normal acid condition. Additionally the ingredients in antacids can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb vital nutrients. Herbs are a more effective approach.

Solutions
Many solutions to indigestion can be found in your kitchen, more specifically your spice rack. Most herbal spices are carminatives (meaning they prevent and relieve gas), stimulants and aids to digestion. Herbal spices are often regarded as “crisis medicine’ and can be thought of as a safe and natural alternative to synthetic drugs. Below is a chart containing items you can find in your spice rack and ways to use them for indigestion.

Spice Medicinal Properties Method of Use
Sweet Basil Prevents/relieves gas, stimulates digestion Make an infusion (tea) with one ounce of basil leaves to a pint of water simmered for twenty minutes
Bay Prevents gas and indigestion Add 1-2 bay leaves to soups and beans.
Caraway Indigestion and gas Make an infusion with an ounce of crushed seeds. Bring water to a rolling boil, turn off heat, add the crushed seeds, steep for 20 minutes. Suggested intake: 2 TBS of the tea frequently until relief
Cardamom Carminative and stimulant mixed with other spices to treat Indigestion and gas Chai tea: grate 1 ounce of fresh ginger, add 7 peppercorns, a cinnamon stick, 5 cloves, and 15 cardamom seeds. Heat in one pint of water, simmering for 10 minutes. Add one-half cup of milk and simmer for another 10 minutes. Add a sprinkle of nutmeg and a few drops of vanilla extract. Drink one cup of tea twice per day.
Cumin Prevent/relieve gas Add Cumin to cooked beans and/or rice. You can also make a tea, however the flavor is very strong. Suggest making gelatin capsules from powdered seeds. Suggested Intake: 2 capsules at mealtime in the evening.
Ginger Indigestion, cramps, nausea Eat crystallized ginger pieces for immediate relief of cramps, nausea and indigestion. Ginger tea can be made by grating one ounce of fresh ginger, simmering 10 mins in a pint of water

Prevention is the best course of Action. We have already discussed incorporating those foods that are BENEFICIAL, thus Healing to your body according to your blood type. Removing foods classified as AVOID will assist in removing known toxins or poisons to your digestive track. In addition we have introduced the concept of eating 80 percent of your diet from Alkaline-base Foods. Above we have listed common kitchen spices that will bring relief to common symptoms of indigestion. The flowing information is provided in the event you would like to take another step in being in Harmony and Balance with your Body, Mind and Spirit. It is a new morning. Maybe you too are greeting your day with the desire to BE Alive and to FEEL Alive. What better way than to feed your body a tonic that addresses the overall health and vitality of your heart, lungs, liver, stomach and digestive track, bowels, eyes, skin, nerves, blood and glands. And that, my friend, is the purpose of the Beautiful Body Beautiful Tonic. May you enjoy an overall feeling of AAAAhhhhh as you create this blend.

Intake form: Capsule, Tea or Herbal Bath. I believe the capsule form will be the easiest and most convenient form of intake. However I personally would like to try this as a tea and herbal bath. Instructions for all methods are listed below.

Capsule Instructions: Pulverize each of your herbs into a fine powder. You can do this using your handy-dandy kitchen coffee grinder. Measure out herb portions as listed below. Blend well. Fill “00” gelatin or vegetable capsules with your concoction. Have FUN while doing this task, as your energy will go into your capsules. Fill them with wonderful thoughts.

Tea Instructions: Using a glass pot, bring a pint-quart of water to a rolling boil. Reduce the heat and Insert your herbs. Steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain your tea making sure to squeeze all the water out of your marc (herbal residue). Enjoy this wonderful addition to your health and well-being. Note one part is usually one ounce. You can adjust your part to fit your needs.

Herbal Bath Instructions: Herbal preparations added to a bath enhance and stimulate the skin and blood supply while the herbs’ medicinal and tonic actions benefit the body organism as a whole. To prepare your herbal bath, prepare a quart of strong herbal tea. Add it to your bath water. Get naked, and then sink into your heavenly concoction. You might choose to drink a cup of hot tea while you are soaking in your herbal bath.

Suggested Intake: 2-12 capsules per day as desired. Generally, use more during periods of convalescence, poor health and high stress. As a tea, enjoy 1-3 cups a day. As an Herbal Bath, as often as you desire.

Contraindications: None. Vitamin C supplementation will enhance this blend’s effectiveness. Vitamin E supplementation is recommended when using any product that contains raw Alfalfa.

Choice of Herbs:
Sarsaparilla root (Smilax officinalis) 1 part
Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus 1 part
Saw Palmetto berries (Serenoa repens-sabal) 1 part
Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) 1 part
Kelp (Laminaria, Macrocystis, Ascophyllym) 1 part
Apple Pectin
1 part

Alfalfa
(Medicago sativa) 1 part
Chaparral
(Larrea divaricata) 1 part
Burdock root (Arctium lappa) 1 part

Hawthorn
berries (Crataegus oxyacantha) 1 part
Goldenseal
root (Hydrastis Canadensis) 1 part
Yellow Dock
root (Rumex crispus) 1 part
Peppermint
leaf (Mentha piperita) 1/8 part
Ginger
root (Zigiber officinale) 1/8 part

Cayenne
(Capsicum annum) 1 /8 part

Validation of each Herb:
Sarsaparilla root (Smilax officinalis) ~ the high content of saponins in this herb attacks microbial substances within the blood stream and neutralizes them which makes this a great candidate for nerves, blood and glands. Sarsaparilla root is also a strong diuretic, stimulating the excretion of wastes such as uric acid and excess chloride.

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) ~ was chosen because it stimulates the central nervous system in small amounts and depresses it in large doses; projects the body and nervous system from stress; increases metabolic functions; increases physical and mental efficiency; lowers blood pressure and glucose levels when high, and raises them when low; increases gastrointestinal movement and tone; increases iron metabolism and causes changes in RNA biosynthesis.

Saw Palmetto berries (Serenoa repens-sabal) ~ was chosen for its effects on general health and disposition; tranquilization; appetite stimulation as well as digestion and nutrient assimilation; and its overall contribution to regulating sexual health/development and normalizing the reproductive health activity of the those glands and organs for both men and women.

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) ~ the affect on the adrenal-pituitary system which stimulates and sustains proper adrenal function in an extremely complex manner by adjusting the concentrations of vital blood salts, is the primary reason I have included Licorice in this blend. Additionally, Licorice root protects the blood supply and enhances its purity by protecting the liver from serious diseases. It is also included in this blend because it modulates and strengthens the activity of other herbs.

Kelp (Laminaria, Macrocystis, Ascophyllum) ~ is a general nutritive tonic to the blood, supplying essential vitamins and mineral salts. It encourages the action of dietary fiber by supplying nutrients and normalizing bowel functions. Iodine, the primary constituent of Kelp activates and regulates metabolism. Kelp has also been included here since it can bind radioactive strontium, barium, cadmium and zinc, some of our most dangerous pollutants, in the gastrointestinal tract, thus prevents their absorption into the body. Kelp is neither carcinogenic nor toxic.

Apple Pectin ~ was chosen for its ability to bind with bile acids, which assists in decreasing cholesterol and fat absorption. Pectin also increases the excretion of neutral bile acids thus protecting the blood and tissue against various environmental toxins. Soviet research shows that heavy metals such as lead and mercury are excreted harmlessly from the body much more efficiently when pectin is included in the diet

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) ~ induces activity in a complex cellular system that inactivates dietary chemical carcinogens in the liver and small intestine before they have a chance to do the body harm. Alfalfa has been shown to possess anti-bacterial actions against negative bacteria and contains at least one protein with known anti-tumor activity. Alfalfa is also a fiber that along with Bran and Pectin, bind and neutralize various types of carcinogenic agents in the colon.

Chaparral (Larrea divaricata) ~ NDGA, the primary constituent in Chaparral reduces inflammation by increasing ascorbic acid levels in the adrenals and inhibits several strains of bacteria, molds and other pathogens. It is used here for its antioxidant and anticancer activity as well as for healing the skin and bone tissue and in preventing pathogenic damage.

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) ~ I chose to include Burdock root as a cleanser, antibiotic and anti-fungal. It improves general nutrition and gradually alters the health of the blood. It is also diuretic and diaphoretic thus promotes the excretion of wastes in both the urine and sweat.

Hawthorn berries (Crataegus oxyacantha) ~ is included for its overall enhancement on the health of the heart by: dilating the blood vessels away from the heart; increasing enzyme metabolism of the heart muscle; increasing oxygen utilization of the heart; and enhancing pulse and cardiac output. The combination of Hawthorn with Cayenne produces a special kind of synergism that augments the cardio tonic activity of both herbs.

Goldenseal root (Hydrastis Canadensis) ~ is included in my blend as a potent antibiotic and antiseptic; for reducing infection and inflammation in the eyes; and for its berberine alkaloids that stimulate bile production and secretion, thus destroying noxious bacteria in the GI tract.

Yellow Dock root (Rumex crispus) ~ is included primarily for its affect on liver functionality and related organs as it increases the ability to strain and purify the blood. I am also using it here to assist with the health of the skin and for its antibacterial properties.

Peppermint leaf (Mentha piperita) ~ the essential oils in the Peppermint leaf enhance digestive activity by stimulating contractile activity in the gallbladder and by encouraging the secretion of bile. Peppermint leaf oils also normalize gastrointestinal activity, remove flaccidity, and reduce stomach cramps. In addition, Peppermint leaf prevents congestion of the blood supply to the brain, helps to clear up any circulatory congestion that exists, stimulates circulation and strengthens and calms nerves. Included also for its anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory and choleretic principles.

Ginger root (Zigiber officinale) ~ is included here primarily as a digestive enzyme and a stimulant against fatigue. Ginger produces a generalized stimulant effect that diffuses slowly from the GI tract, gently energizing the blood, thus producing a feeling of warmness counteracting fatigue.

Cayenne (Capsicum annum) ~ is used here for its positive effects on circulation, the heart, the stomach and all other systems of the body. Cayenne will lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure. It also ensures the rapid and even distribution of the active principles of the rest of the herbs to critical functional centers of the body, including those involved in cellular respiration, metabolism, data transmission and neural-hormonal activation. In extremely small quantities it can dramatically increase the efficiency of most other herbs.

The Beauty of Detoxification and Cleansing ~ Paper

The Beauty of Detoxification and Cleansing
by NADINE, N.D., C.N.S.

Cleansing, detoxifying and assisting the body in the elimination of accumulated toxins provide a way for the whole body system to regain balance, harmony and alignment. The human body is an incredible healing machine and when given the support it needs, will heal itself, since all healing comes from within.

Toxins accumulate from a variety of reasons including but not limited to: stress, the use of antibiotics; improper diet including a high intake of refined wheat, refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, too much of, or a lack of protein; and a lack of stomach acid. One of the prime functions of stomach acid is to facilitate the breakdown of proteins. Low stomach acid may prevent the complete breakdown of proteins, preventing them from being fully assimilated thus leaving food for bacteria to grow. We can detoxify the body and assist it in eliminating those toxins using eliminative herbs that act as laxatives, diuretics, diaphoretics and blood purifiers.

The goals of detoxification and cleansing are to assist the whole body system to realign, regain balance and harmony thus promoting an overall feeling of health and well-being. Many positive affects can be achieved and enjoyed through this process. These might include: increased energy levels; improved mental clarity and function; improved digestion and elimination; enhanced immune system and resistance to infection of illness; and improved blood circulation with healthy glowing skin. A person might also achieve an inner spiritual awareness, heighten senses, and increased levels of joy and happiness.

There are many formulas available to detoxify and cleanse the body ranging from a general point of view to accommodating an individual’s specific health condition. (i.e. cleansing the liver, preventing cancer, removing candida overgrowth, improving bowel moments, etc.) The intention of the formula presented here is to provide a general detoxification and cleansing opportunity in any person desiring to achieve an overall sense of well-being by the removal of unwanted toxins.

Detoxification & Cleansing Herbal Combination

Intake form: Capsules. This form was chosen for its ease in delivery.

Mixing Instructions: Fill “00” gelatin or vegetable capsules with a well-blended combination of the powders of the following herbs

Suggested Intake: Detoxification, purification & cleansing programs: 3-4 capsules, 2-3 times per day, with meals. For Routine Maintenance: 2-4 capsules daily with meals.

Choice of Herbs:
Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) 3 parts
Yellow Dock
root (Rumex Crispus) 3 parts
Chapparal
(Larrea divaricata) 3 parts
Licorice
root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) 1 part
Burdock
root (Arctium lappa) 1 part
Cascara Sagrada
bark (Rhamnus purshiana) 1 part
Kelp
(Laminaria, Macrocystis, Ascophyllym) 1 part
Echinacea
(Echinacea augustifolia) 1 part
Cayenne
(Capsicum annum) 1 part

Validation of each Herb:
Dandelion root ~ strains and filters toxins and wastes from the bloodstream thus primarily acts by purifying the blood. A healthy liver is required to provide effective blood detoxification. Dandelion stimulates bile production and helps the body get rid of excess water produced by the diseased liver. Dandelion extracts are also beneficial to the spleen and improve the health of the pancreas.

Yellow Dock root ~ also primarily affects liver function and the health of related organs, increasing their ability to strain and purify the blood. Yellow Dock also has antibacterial properties.

Chapparal ~ NDGA, the primary constituent in Chaparral reduces inflammation by increasing ascorbic acid levels in the adrenals and inhibits several strains of bacterial, molds and other pathogens. It is used here for its antioxidant and anticancer activity as well as for healing the skin and bone tissue and in preventing pathogenic damage. Though often called creosote bush, Chapparral contains no creosote.

Licorice root ~ stimulates and sustains proper adrenal function in an extremely complex manner by adjusting the concentrations of vital blood salts. Additionally Licorice root protects the blood supply and enhances its purity by protecting the liver from serious diseases.

Burdock root ~ as an alternative Burdock root improves general nutrition and gradually alters the health of the blood. It is also diuretic and diaphoretic thus promotes the excretion of wastes in both the urine and sweat. This powerful herb thus helps cleanse the body of toxins and wastes in three ways. It also has antibiotic and antifungal principals.

Cascara Sagrada bark ~ is the primary laxative in this herbal combination. The laxative in any detoxification blend is meant to aid in the removal of consolidated, bacterial-laden waste matter that accumulates in the large intestine during periods of illness. Cascara eases the passage of this material without producing griping, cramping, diarrhea or constipative rebound.

Kelp ~ is a general nutritive tonic to the blood, supplying essential vitamins and mineral salts. It encourages the action of dietary fiber by supplying nutrients and normalizing bowel functions. Iodine, the primary constituent of Kelp activates and regulates metabolism. Kelp is an important adjunct to any cleansing program since it can bind radioactive strontium, barium, cadmium and zinc, some of our most dangerous pollutants, in the gastrointestinal tract, thus prevents their absorption into the body. Kelp is neither carcinogenic nor toxic.

Echinacea ~ is another classical alternative which increases the phagocytic activity of the white blood cells to fight, destroy and eat toxic organisms that invade the body. It increases and stabilizes the red blood cell count and stimulates the elimination of waste products. Echinacea significantly stimulates the body’s own blood cleansing system.

Cayenne ~ is used here as a catalyst to stimulate the vital organs to greater activity. It promotes cardiovascular activity, lowers overall blood pressure, and acts directly as a diaphoretic, stimulating excretion of wastes in the sweat.

Additional suggestions: Detoxification and cleansing can be greatly enhanced with dry skin brushing. Brush dry skin immediately before showering or bathing, start with the feet and gently brush up toward the heart. Brush from the extremities toward the center. Brush gently in a circular motion around your abdomen and breast/chest area. A proper dry skin brush is made of vegetable bristles that are neither too stiff nor too soft. It shouldn’t scratch, but you should feel some friction against the skin
